During the winter months, more and more days are spent in the dark. This may mean that it is difficult tofind motivationto go out and ride a bike, no matter how much you like exercise in summer.
So we thought now would be a good time to introduce you to our favorite tips and tricks to keep you safe and happy cycling at night.
The idea of cycling in the dark can be intimidating no matter the time of year (or day!) , but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re sensible and well prepared, nighttime bike rides can be some of the most peaceful and enjoyable.
1. Use bike lights
In the UK, lighting your bike at night is considered so essential that there are laws requiring it. This is both for your own safety and that of those around you.
Bike lightsare used to alert motorists, pedestrians and other road users of your presence. This reduces the risk of accidents because they can give you the necessary space on the road.
We thought we’d start our list with this because, although our guide consists mainly of advice, the use of bicycle lights is mandatory by law – and therefore the most important!
2. Wear Extra Layers
When the sun sets, it is almost always accompanied by a drop in temperature.
You may think that because you exercise, you will warm up easily. But the last thing you want is to shiver and wish you were comfortable at home when you’re on the bike.
Our first recommendation is a base coat. It keeps you warm on cold nights and wicks away sweat to keep you dry, making it perfect for nighttime exercise.
The second is the humble raincoat. Ideally, one of the raincoats that fits in a pouch. These can easily be slipped into a pocket or your bike basket – taking up minimal space.

3. Attach a saddle bag
There are some things you should always take with you on a bike ride. And, what better way to transport them than in asaddle bag?
The mini bags attach to the bottom of your saddle (you guessed it). They are perfect for storing your phone,a multi-tool and those snacks needed to refuel!
The breakdown is even more difficult to overcome in the dark. So, having a phone to call for help or use as a flashlight can mean the difference between solving the problem and having to wheel your bike home.
4. Plan your route
It’s always important to properly plan your route before starting a trip, but it’s even more important at night.
When you cycle in the dark, everything seems different, places that were once easily spotted in daylight can sometimes become difficult to see. Planning your itinerary before you leave can only benefit you and make your trip a little easier.
5. Tires
Before starting a trip, it is always a good idea to check your tires as you would a car. Driving with tires that could puncture can cause serious accidents, as can poorly inflated tires.
On top of that, having poorly inflated tires can slow down your journey, you are more likely to get punctures if you don’t already have one and the bike is not able to handle the impact of the ground as well . Repairing a puncture at night is never easy!
